Abortion Pill Side Effects

When facing an unplanned pregnancy, being informed about each option is how you can come to an empowering decision for your body and your health, and the abortion pill is no different. Part of making a confident decision is knowing the abortion pill side effects that you may experience if you choose to take it.

What is the abortion pill?
Also known medically as RU-486, the abortion pill is a two-dose process. The first pill is usually taken while at the doctor’s office while the second is taken while at home between 1 to 2 days following the first one. The abortion pill must be prescribed by a doctor and is not available over the counter.

What are the abortion pill side effects?
The abortion pill, like any medical procedure, comes with side effects that you need to be aware of. Some abortion pill side effects are more common, while others are more serious and require immediate medical attention.

Common side effects include:
  • Heavy bleeding/cramping
  • Nausea
  • Weakness
  • Fever/chills
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
Serious and potentially long-term side effects include:
  • Infection/sepsis
  • Allergic reaction
  • Blood clotting
  • Excessive blood loss
  • Incomplete abortion
Though it is rare, some severe reactions as a result of this medication, like infection, can be fatal. It’s important to note that the abortion pill will not treat an ectopic pregnancy.

What is an ectopic pregnancy?
An ectopic pregnancy is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition where the egg implants itself somewhere other than the uterus like in a fallopian tube. The only way to determine whether you have an ectopic pregnancy is through an ultrasound, which Pregnancy Support Center can provide you with at no cost.
